EPR – EXTENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY
The E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016 were published by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change makes e-waste is the cost, producers should pay. The concept of extended producer responsibility (EPR) is introduced to support improved collection, recycling and treatment of waste. The scope of EPR was not limited to financial obligations for producers, but also included information, logistics, waste management and even product design responsibilities.
PRO-PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY ORGANIZATION
As the cost of setting up of a dedicated exclusive collection, recycling and disposal units for the handling of used products is unlikely to be cost effective, organizations prefer to share the same with a view to minimizing costs. Besides organizations would also need to individually acquire/develop skills for assessing the needs and develop compliance methodologies. Thus the manufacturer/producer is better off in employing a competent organization which shoulders the producer’s responsibility on his behalf, supports compliance with the laid down rules and regulations and provides necessary management information and product support system to minimize the use of resources and costs.
PRO underwrites the implementation of EPR scheme on behalf of producer.
